After much trial and error my Hubby and I took a leap and purchased a food saver at WalMart. The cost was $49, the time and effort it saved, priceless! Let me explain. Stockpiling food is an excellent thing to do in this day and age. Having enough food on hand for an actual " event " is another challenge. Bulk is ONE WAY to go. Remember the old saying, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Use other methods of food stockpiling such as MRE's, searching the internet for sites that sell food that has extended shelf life. Pleasant hill grains is an excellent source for that. Buying foods on sale is a good idea but don't forget to rotate those items in your pantry. Anyway, back to the food saver. If you aren't familiar with a food saver it is an electric gadget that vacuum seals your food in pouches to help keep it edible longer. Beans and rice stored in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers can extend their shelf life to 20 years or longer. The only place I have found mylar bags is on the internet, I purchase mine from eBay. The oxygen absorbers are also purchased on eBay. Word on the street aka You tube is that hand warmers work the same way as oxygen absorbers. Haven't tried the hand warmers yet, I need to check out the price of those compared to oxygen absorbers.
Happy prepping!

Did you purchase a magnesium fire starter for your bug out bag yet? If so, good for you! We have several in ours. If you aren't sure how to make it work there are several videos on You Tube to help you out with that. Someone recently gave me a great idea of what to use for kindling. I tried it out and it works great! The idea is to save the lint from your dryer. You should have some type of kindling in your bug out bag and this works great because it weighs almost nothing and it catches on fire quickly.
I hope your bug out bag is progressing nicely and that you are having fun putting it together.
Have a safe and happy New Year!
