One of the first items we purchased in 2005 was a portable generator. We had four Hurricanes in central Florida in 2004 and we didn't have a way to produce electricity to preserve our refrigerated or frozen food. Since we also wanted the comfort of air conditioning in the event of a power outage we invested in a small window A/C for our bedroom. When buying a generator do your home work to discover what size generator best suits your needs. You will need to know the generator power output as well as the estimated load assessment. The running load is the total wattage sum of all the devises you plan on running. When using a generator put SAFETY FIRST. Place the generator outside of your home. Do not place the generator in the garage or other enclosed place where carbon monoxide fumes can seep into your home. Purchasing a carbon monoxide detector would be an excellent way to help protect you and your family. We also invested in gas cans. We purchased cans to hold the number of gallons we estimated we would need in the event of a hurricane power outage. We haven't had to use our generator yet and I hope we never do but it is a comfort to know it is there if we need it. It is a good idea to test run the generator once a year.
Thanks for visiting the survival zone.
